San Francisco

We had the best time in San Francisco and Napa Valley!  We didn't want to come home.

This is our first vineyard and wine tasting we went to. It was Robert Biale's "Black Chicken", which is what they called wine during prohibition. We bought two bottles to take home with us, but they didn't last long, we drank them both later that night at the hotel. No judging!!

Chinatown market

A sickening display of dried fish hanging in a Chinatown market. Doesn't that look appetizing?

A little snap shot at fisherman's wharf, right before we took the Alcatraz tour.
It was freakin' freezin

This was part of the wine tour for Domaine Chandon, they're best known for their champagnes and being owned by Louis Vuton & family. Our tour took us down to the wine cave were we got to see their Pinot Noir barrels. As Jeff said - "You definitely don't want to bump up against these bad boys".

The weather started to clear up and we could notice how beautiful their gardens were.

This is the phenomenal place we stayed in at Yountville, which is right in the heart of Napa Valley.
I highly recommend staying here!  It was a perfect walking distance to all the restaurants we went to and locally centered for the winery's.

Bouchon was a French bistro right across the street from Vintage Inn

This is at Robert Sinskey winery, or as Miss Deb puts it, Robert "Sandusky" winery. I told her she may want to get that corrected asap. Again, we bought two bottles and drank them later that night. What did I say about no judging?!

Meeting up with some old family friends of the Brooks; the Eaton's. Mackie Eaton on the far left helped Jeff plan the entire trip. She definitely recommended all the right places.

This is our last tasting of the day, at Beulieu Vineyards, they let us taste directly out of the barrel. One out of a French oak barrel and one out of an American Oak barrel - Tastes the same to me believe it or not.

The Marshall Store was a local joint right on Tomales Bay. Best oysters we've ever had. We meant to take pictures of them but ate them too fast.

 That's a lotta wood

One of last stops of the trip was Golden Gate Bridge.

My New Name ...

Is Aunt Coco!  On Friday at 9:12 a.m. my sister had her baby!!   Both Anne and baby James are doing great - Jeff and I headed down Friday afternoon to congratulate them and meet SBJ (Sweet Baby James)

Just Born - 1st day in this world!!

They came home this morning and we had a champagne toast waiting on them!

 Proud Poppa

Piper meets him for the first time.  Throughout the weekend we brought home the blanket James was wrapped up in and one of his hats for Piper so she could get use to his smell.  I think it worked perfectly!  Piper is already in love with him!!

Picture of the grandparents

Weekend Recap

We just had the best weekend with my parents and my in-laws!!  I love it when we are all together. And we had the BEST food - we ate all weekend long and it was wonderful!!  Most of you know that I am a foodie and as a foodie this weekend topped them all.

Friday: Mom and dad arrived around 3, I got off work around 4, and the party began!  They brought up trout (similar to salmon in color and taste) and we had the crew over for trout, rice, salad and Mrs. Deb's strawberry shortcakes.  Sorry no pictures - there was no time- food went down to fast!  I watched dad cook the fish so I will know how to do that in the future, but I still need to sit down with Mrs. Deb next time she makes the short cakes.  They were Awesome!!

Saturday: We went out to eat at Folks Folly for a little early birthday celebrations. Best steak ever!

Sunday: On mothers day I had a brunch celebration at our house to honor my mom and mother-in-law.  The menu consisted of shrimp and grits, ham biscuits, fruit with baileys dipping sauce, mimosa's, and bloody mary's. I have to say, the shrimp and grits were the best I have ever had.  It started from a Food.com recipe, but I modified it to add white wine, tomatoes, changed the cheese, and added more sauce.  Here it is below:

Shrimp and Grits
(serves 8)

Ingredients:4 cups water

1 (29 ounce) can chicken broth

1 1/2 cups half-and-half

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

2 cups regular grits (I used quick grits and they were fine)

2 cups Gouda cheese

4 tablespoons butter

1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce

1/2 teaspoon white pepper

6-8 slices bacon

2 lbs medium shrimp, peeled and deveined

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup flour

2 cups sliced mushrooms

2 cans petite diced tomatoes

1 1/2 cup sliced green onion

5-6 cloves garlic, minced

1 1/2 -2 cup white wine

4 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

1/2 teaspoon Tabasco sauce

2 to taste lemon wedge

Directions:

Grits:  Bring first 4 ingredients to a boil in a medium saucepan; gradually whisk in grits; reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, 10 minutes or until thickened; add Gouda cheese and next 4 ingredients; set aside but keep warm.

Sauce & Shrimp:
- Line cookie sheet with aluminum foil and lay down slices of bacon.  Cook in the oven at 350 for 15-20 minutes or until it has reached the desired crispiness (Alternative method is to cook bacon in a pan); remove bacon and drain on paper towels, reserve 3-4 tablespoon of drippings and put in a skillet; crumble bacon and set aside.
- Sprinkle shrimp with pepper and salt; dredge in flour. Set aside.
- Saute mushrooms in hot drippings in skillet 5 minutes, or until tender; add green onions and saute 2 minutes; and garlic and saute 2 minutes; stir in white wine, lemon juice, tomatoes, and hot sauce and cook 2 more minutes, stir in salt and pepper to taste. Add shrimp to the sauce and stir until they are pink.  If the sauce looks dry then add white wine and lemon.

Serve: Divide grits into large, shallow soup bowls; divide shrimp mixture into servings and place on top of grits; top each serving with crumbled bacon and serve with lemon wedges

If you are going to make for a crowd then you can do a few things ahead of time:
- Peel and devein shrimp
- Grade cheese
- chop green onions

Afterwards we relaxed on the deck - my kind of weekend!!

Atlanta Here I Come

I am heading to Atlanta this weekend with my sister and Mom. A little girls trip - YAY!!

We have a long list of places we want to go but one of them is Scott's Antique Market . I am sooo excited about going because I have soo much I want to buy for the house. I have never been there but hear it is AMAZING!

Things on my list to look for:

  • More bookshelves items - which is harder than it sounds because my bookshelves are not tall which limits a lot of the cute items I want to use. For example, I love when bookshelves have lamps that illuminate the area - Unfortunately, no lamps will fit :( So the search begins.

  • Potentially, a chair for the office - I've been in search for one but keep going back and forth on the fabric options. Part of me want to choose something that is young and different but then the other part of me want to pick something that I will like for a while and wont get sick of.

  • Frames & Art work for Office and/or Bedrooms - I want to use different types frames for the office similar to what Kate Spade did: (P.S. I love her - we just got a Kate Spade store in Memphis and I am soooo Excited!! Spent about two hours in the store the first time i went - not really sure how, considering it is pretty tiny. Needless to say, they had some great items and great sales!!!)

  • Seating/Bench - I have been wanting a bench in my mud room/laundry room. I have found this cute little bench from West Elm but just checked recently and they don't sell it anymore :( I will have to keep my eye out for something else

No matter what I find or don't find it will be a fun trip. Dad is hooking us up with rooms at the Ritz Carlton so it will for sure be a great time! Thanks Dad! Wish us luck!
